The muscle car is an automobile that has powerful engines, most of which are produced in the United States. The “muscle cars” were created during the 1960s and 1970s in response to the gasoline shortages, emphasizing generating horsepower and speed, along with luxurious accommodations.

For many years these vehicles were characterized by an engine sitting high up in the front of the vehicle like a hood scoop. Originally, this engine placement was designed to allow more room for better suspensions and brakes; however, it also ensured that the driver would be able to see over any vehicles in front of them.

A noticeable feature of most muscle cars is their large displacement V-8 engines. These engines gave the vehicles incredible power while maintaining the ability to accelerate very quickly. Some people consider the muscle cars of this time to be “gas guzzlers” because they were generally driven by older, affluent men with large egos (and even larger paychecks). With all this power and luxury, these vehicles were also equipped with comfortable seating for eight people, which only added to their appeal.

The Muscle Car Era came to an end in 1974 when the US Federal Government passed stricter emissions regulations requiring them to have catalytic converters on the exhaust systems. These converters reduced horsepower while increasing fuel consumption. This also contributed greatly towards gas prices skyrocketing during that period. For these reasons, designers decided it was necessary to produce more efficient vehicles which are what America has today.
